What We’ve Found on Dental X-Rays (That You Can’t See From the Outside)
When pet owners think about dental disease, they often picture tartar or bad breath. What many don’t realize is that the most serious dental problems are often hidden below the gumline — completely invisible during a visual exam.
That’s why at Three Rivers Animal Hospital, we perform dental X-rays during every dental procedure. These X-rays allow us to see what’s really happening beneath the surface — and what we’ve found has been eye-opening.

📸 Why Dental X-Rays Matter
Did you know that over 50% of each tooth is below the gumline?
Without X-rays, painful and dangerous conditions can easily be missed. Dental X-rays help us:
✔️ Identify hidden infections
✔️ Detect painful conditions early
✔️ Make informed treatment decisions
✔️ Prevent chronic pain and serious complications
Here are some of the things we’ve discovered only because dental X-rays were performed.
🦷 Slab Fractures (Often Painful & Infected)

We frequently find slab fractures, especially in dogs that chew on hard objects like bones, antlers, or hard toys.
🔍 On X-ray, these fractures often show:
- Exposed pulp canals
- Root infections
- Bone loss around the tooth
Many of these pets were still eating normally — but living with constant oral pain.
🫥 Roots Still There… But the Tooth Is Gone
One of the most surprising findings for owners is discovering tooth roots still embedded in the jaw, even though the visible tooth crown is gone.
This can happen when:
- A tooth breaks off long ago
- Severe dental disease causes the crown to fall out
🚨 These retained roots can cause:
- Chronic infection
- Pain
- Abscess formation

🧱 Teeth “Held In” by Tartar Alone

We’ve seen teeth that appear stable on the surface — but on X-ray, the truth is shocking.
🦷 Some teeth are:
- No longer attached to bone
- Surrounded by severe bone loss
- Literally being held in place only by hardened tartar
These teeth are extremely painful and unstable, even if they don’t look dramatic from the outside.
🧬 Oral & Jaw Masses/Lesions
Dental X-rays sometimes reveal masses in the mouth or jaw that weren’t visible during an exam.
These findings can include:
- Bone destruction
- Tooth root displacement
- Changes that raise concern for infection or cancer
Early detection gives us the opportunity to act sooner — which can be lifesaving.
🦴 Bone Loss

In serious cases, dental X-rays have revealed severe bone loss, sometimes associated with:
- Severe dental disease
- Trauma
- Advanced bone loss
These pets may present with subtle signs like difficulty chewing or drooling — making X-rays critical for diagnosis.
💜 Why This Matters for Your Pet
Many of the pets with these findings:
- Were still eating
- Didn’t cry or paw at their mouths
- Appeared “fine” at home
But dental disease is painful — and pets are experts at hiding discomfort.
Dental X-rays allow us to:
✔️ Treat pain properly
✔️ Remove diseased teeth
✔️ Prevent infections from spreading
✔️ Improve quality of life
