Case of the Week: Sago Palm Toxicity in a Dachshund — A Rare Success Story

Case of the Week: Sago Palm Toxicity in a Dachshund — A Rare Success Story

Some cases remind us why asking the right questions — and acting quickly — can make all the difference.

This week’s Case of the Week involves a dachshund who ingested sago palm leaves and seeds, a toxin that is unfortunately often fatal in dogs. Thanks to attentive owners, persistent veterinary care, collaboration with colleagues, and a little luck, this patient made a full recovery — an outcome we don’t see nearly often enough with this toxin.

🌿 What Is Sago Palm & Why Is It So Dangerous?

Sago palms are common ornamental plants in yards and landscaping across Louisiana. Unfortunately, every part of the plant is toxic to pets, especially:

  • 🌰 Seeds (the most toxic part)
  • 🌿 Leaves
  • 🌱 Roots and trunk

Sago palms contain cycasin, a powerful toxin that causes severe liver damage.

🚨 Even small amounts can be deadly, and symptoms may not appear immediately.

🕰️ Delayed Symptoms Can Be Deceptive

This dachshund did not present immediately after ingestion.

Instead, he came in a few days later because:

  • He wasn’t feeling well
  • He had stopped eating
  • He was lethargic and withdrawn

These delayed signs are common with sago palm toxicity — which makes diagnosis more challenging.

🩺 Piecing the Puzzle Together

During his exam, our team asked detailed questions about:

  • Diet
  • Medications
  • Environmental exposures
  • Yard and household plants

That’s when we learned he had access to — and had eaten — sago palm leaves and seeds.

This information immediately raised serious concern.

🧪 Diagnostics Confirmed Severe Liver Injury

Bloodwork revealed that his liver values were significantly elevated, confirming that the toxin had already caused substantial liver damage.

At this point, the prognosis with sago palm toxicity is often guarded to poor — but early, aggressive treatment offers the best chance.

🏥 Hospitalization for the Best Chance at Survival

The owner elected to hospitalize him immediately, giving him the best possible chance.

During hospitalization, he received:

  • 💧 IV fluids to support liver function and hydration
  • 💊 Medications to protect the liver and gastrointestinal tract
  • 🩺 Close, continuous monitoring

Despite aggressive care, he initially continued to struggle, which is unfortunately common with this toxin.

🤝 Teamwork Made the Difference

Because his condition remained critical, we reached out to fellow veterinarians for additional support.

One colleague came to provide some Eastern medicine to support our Western medicine approach:

  • 🪡 Acupuncture, to support comfort and overall healing
  • 🍽️ A specialized diet designed to support liver function

This collaborative approach gave him additional tools to fight the damage already done.

🌱 A Turning Point After One Long Week

After a full week in the hospital, we finally saw improvement:

  • His appetite slowly returned
  • His energy began to improve
  • His liver values stabilized

This was the turning point we had been hoping for.

🏠 Discharge & Recovery

Once stable, he was discharged to go home on:

  • GI support medications
  • Liver-protective medications
  • A carefully selected diet

Over time, he continued to improve — and ultimately made a full recovery.

⚠️ Why This Outcome Is Rare

As grateful as we are for this success, it’s important to be honest:

👉 Many dogs exposed to sago palm are not this lucky.

Even with treatment:

  • Liver failure can progress rapidly
  • Neurologic signs and bleeding disorders can occur
  • Mortality rates are high

This case is the exception — not the rule.
